What to look for when choosing a homeopath
I frequently see this question raised in various Facebook groups by those seeking a homeopath. To assist, I’ve compiled a list of commonly asked questions along with my personal responses to each. I believe it is essential to schedule a discovery call with any practitioner you are considering, to ensure that you are a good fit and feel confident in entrusting them with your care.
What qualifications and training do you have in homeopathy?
This is one of the most important questions you can ask someone you are considering entrusting your care to. There are many, many levels of homeopaths…from doctors who specialize in homeopathy all the way down to those that just study on their own with no formal training. When choosing a homeopath for a chronic condition, it is important you know their qualifications. Chronic conditions are far more complex than small acute situations and take a careful and watchful eye of someone who understands the philosophy’s and principles of homeopathy and how to properly apply them.
I completed my training at the Academy of Homeopathic Education (AHE), a rigorous and immersive program spanning two years, followed by an additional year of supervised practice. The program required 500 hours of didactic study and 500 hours of live clinical training. Rather than relying on outdated video or paper cases, we worked directly with live clients via Zoom, dedicating around six hours per case to both listening and in-depth analysis alongside some of the most experienced homeopaths in the field. As part of our comprehensive training, we were also required to complete a college-level course in Anatomy and Physiology. AHE is accredited by ACHENA, an organization that ensures the highest standards of educational excellence in the practice of classical homeopathy.
I am also currently pursuing a postgraduate program as a student at Jeremy Sherr’s Dynamis School for Advanced Homeopathic Studies. Jeremy is a world-renowned homeopath with 45 years of teaching experience.
Are you a certified or licensed homeopath?
There are a few options for homeopaths to become certified or licensed. This helps to elevate homeopathy by setting standards to ensure that homeopaths have been properly trained. Being certified or licensed also requires continuing education for homeopaths to ensure we are always learning and expanding our knowledge.
I am a Board-Certified Homeopathic Practitioner through the North American Homeopathy Examiners, an achievement that requires completion of an ACHENA-accredited educational program in order to qualify for the examination. Additionally, I am a Licensed Homeopathic Practitioner through the State of Arizona’s Board of Homeopathic and Integrated Medicine Examiners. This licensure also mandates graduation from an ACHENA-approved institution, ensuring a high standard of training and professional competency.
Do you have experience with my specific condition?
I come across this question often, and I completely understand why it’s such an important one. When you’re not feeling well, it’s only natural to want to ensure that the practitioner you choose truly understands your condition and can genuinely help. However, it’s helpful to keep in mind that homeopathy approaches “dis-ease” quite differently from modern medicine. While conventional medicine tends to focus on identifying a specific virus, bacteria, or malfunctioning body system, homeopathy takes a broader, more holistic view—considering the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of health, as well as an individual’s susceptibility.
For homeopaths, the key question isn’t just what you have, but how you have it. Two people might share the same diagnosis yet experience it in entirely different ways. This is where homeopathy truly shines: by focusing on the unique expression of symptoms in each individual, allowing for a highly personalized approach to care. Of course, there are certain situations where it’s wise to seek out a practitioner with advanced training and specific expertise—particularly in cases involving complex conditions such as cancer or severe autoimmune disorders. In these instances, working with a specialist who has deeper experience in these areas can be important.
In my practice, I work with a wide variety of health concerns. Some of the conditions I’ve supported clients with include anxiety, depression, PCOS, hormonal imbalances, behavioral challenges in children, learning difficulties, vertigo, skin conditions, headaches and migraines, PANS/PANDAS, recurring illnesses, trauma, mental health concerns, and memory issues, just to name a few. Every case is unique, and I’m committed to addressing each individual’s needs with care and attention.
What is your approach to treatment - classical, practical, or something else?
This is an excellent and very important question. There is a wide variety of approaches among homeopathic practitioners, and it’s essential to understand a practitioner’s method before you begin working together.
I am a classically trained homeopath, which means my education is grounded in the principles and philosophy established by Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy. Classical homeopathy focuses on prescribing one carefully selected remedy at a time, based on the totality of an individual’s symptoms. Using multiple remedies at once can obscure the healing process, making it difficult to understand what is truly effective. Classical homeopathy also demands strong case management skills, along with a deep understanding of homeopathic philosophy and how to thoughtfully apply it to each unique case.
How long does it take to see improvement?
This is a thoughtful and important question, though it can be a bit challenging to answer definitively since every individual is unique. Factors such as the nature of the condition, how long it has been present, living circumstances, and many other variables all play a role in the healing process. I generally advise clients to commit to at least six months of care to allow for meaningful progress. While we gather as much information as possible during the initial consultation, cases often evolve over time, and as we get to know each other better, new insights emerge that help guide us more effectively.
It's also worth noting that finding the right remedy can take a little time—it’s not uncommon for it to require a few adjustments before we identify the one that truly resonates. If you’d like additional reassurance, don’t hesitate to ask your homeopath for client reviews or see if they have any clients who would be open to sharing their experience with you.
What is included in my care?
This can vary quite a bit depending on the practitioner. Some may charge separately for emails or phone calls, while others include remedies in the cost of the consultation. Access to the practitioner can also differ—some are more readily available than others, and some include acute care as part of their services. There are many different models of practice, so it’s always a good idea to clarify what’s included before you begin, to ensure it aligns with the needs of you and your family.
In my practice, clients under chronic care enjoy included support for any acute issues that may arise. This means if you become ill, experience an injury, undergo surgery, or have a similar situation, that care is provided at no additional cost. I do not charge for brief emails or quick phone calls; however, if a more in-depth follow-up is needed to fully assess the situation, a follow-up fee will apply. I strive to be easily accessible by text or email, and I typically respond within 24 hours during business hours. Messages sent after hours are answered as availability permits.
While remedies are not included in the consultation fee, I provide clear instructions for ordering directly from a trusted lab. The cost of remedies is generally quite reasonable, typically ranging between $10 and $25.
Are you a Christian?
I’ve seen this question come up many times, and while some practitioners may not think it should be a factor in choosing a homeopath, for many people, it truly matters. If this is important to you, don't hesitate to ask your potential homeopath about their beliefs and how it might influence their practice. This isn't limited to just one faith or belief system; it's something that spans across different spiritual and cultural backgrounds.
For me personally, I am a Christian homeopath, and I keep my practice rooted in my Christian faith, as well as the principles laid out by Samuel Hahnemann. I treat clients from all walks of life, of all faiths and beliefs, and I do not discriminate. My approach remains professional and respectful, ensuring that every patient feels comfortable and heard, regardless of their spiritual or cultural background.
What are your fees?
Pricing can vary significantly from one practitioner to another, and there is a wide range of costs to consider. While I understand that price is an important factor for many people, I encourage you to think beyond just the cost when choosing a practitioner. It’s essential to consider the quality of care and whether the approach aligns with your needs.
For my practice, the fee for an initial consultation is $250. This is a thorough session lasting one to two hours, where we take the time to explore all aspects of your health and case in depth. Follow-up consultations are priced at $75, typically lasting around 30 minutes, and focus on discussing how you’ve responded to the remedy. I also offer family plans, which allow you to schedule up to three follow-up consultations within an hour at a discounted rate. This is a great option for families seeking ongoing support.
I offer a sliding scale for those who may need financial assistance. Please feel free to reach out if you'd like to discuss this option further.
